"When I was 12 years old I watched the The Hawaii Ironman and made myself a promise that before I turn 40 I will complete an Ironman. I shared this with one person, my mother, she has since passed away, but I know she is watching and will be rooting me on!"
Colin Lake completed this year's Florida Iron Man Triathlon in Panama City Beach, Florida on Nov 3, 2007 in 12:08. He swam 2.4 miles, biked 112 miles, and then ran 26.2 miles. He performed this amazing feat in honor of his mother, Joan Lake ("Aunt Joan"), his cousin, Billy Lake, and the late Jon Blais, aka "Blazeman."
Colin's mom was Joan Lake, wife of Jim "Jinx" Lake, and beloved mother of 9, who died on April 6, 2002 (her nephew Billy Lake also died on April 6, but in 1992). She was a wonderful woman who was known for her kindness and deep faith, as well as her nutty sense of humor. Aunt Joan was the first person to roll up her sleeves and pitch in and help when there was a need. Her children have inherited that same sense of compassion, generosity, and hard work as evidenced by Colin's mission. The Billy Lake ALS Research Team is honored to once again benefit from Aunt Joan Lake.
Inspired and moved by Jon Blais' <http://alswarriorpoet.com> incredible feat Colin dedicated his performance to the fight against ALS. Jon Blais was 35 years old and a triathlon veteran who lost his battle to ALS in May of 2007.
You can still show your support for Colin's superhuman effort by donating money to "Colin's Ironman fund for ALS." This was just an incredible effort by an incredibly good person.
" When I watched the 2005 Ironman I saw Jon Blais finish the race with ALS it immediately made me think of 2 things; 1st My cousin Billy who died of this horrible disease and 2nd now is the time for me to get involved in fighting ALS and fulfill my commitment to myself and my mother!"
